An initiative by the Newbury Society and supported by the Newbury District Field Club, since the Open Day in March 2010, The City Project (TCP) have met regularly to plan further activities. The City is a historic area of Newbury.
The group primarily exists to promote, research and document the history of Bucklebury from the earliest times to the 21st Century and share findings with all those who are interested. We have oral recodings of memories of parishioners, and old photographs as well as the Bucklebury History database. Currently the group is working on the memorial inscriptions in the churchyard, and researching the 1851 census to trace buildings and families who were recorded.
The Berkshire Local History Association (BLHA) was founded in 1976 to encourage interest in local history in the county, both before and after the 1974 boundary changes. This includes education and training, research, and publication.
It provides a common meeting-ground for individual members, the various local history societies and groups within the county, and the professionals working in archives, museums, and education.
The Battlefields Trust aims to:
- Save battlefields from destruction by motorways, housing developments etc.
- Provide a range of battlefield-related activities and information, including the quarterly journal 'Battlefield', battlefield walks and conferences
- Liase with local and national organisations to preserve battlefields for posterity
- Improve the interpretation and presentation of battlefields
The society exists to promote an interest, not only in the local history of Thatcham and district, but also in historical matters in general. A regular series of talks by invited speakers takes place throughout the year. We have a wide range of subject matter in the talks by interpreting "historical" relevance very freely. Past talks have covered reports of visits to the ancient civilisations of the Middle East and South America, aspects of industrial, transport and agricultural history, as well as aspects of the local history of Thatcham and District.
