Newbury's success as a town was based on its position as a major crossroad in the centre of southern England - the Great West Road passed through the town, as did the main route from Southampton and Winchester (once England's capital) to Oxford and beyond. Today the M4 and A34 have bypassed the town, but the legacy of the earlier roads remain. From prehistoric times the River Kennet was an important route, later it was used to create an inland port at Newbury and then was linked to the River Avon during the Georgian canal boom. Then came the railway, at first bypassing the town, but soon Newbury was connected to this revolutionary new form of transport.
