Thwarted in his attempt to relieve the siege of Basing House, King Charles I quartered his royalist army in Newbury. Three parliamentarian generals, Essex, Waller and Manchester aided by their subordinate Oliver Cromwell combined their forces at Basingstoke and marched to meet him. The ensuing desperate battle ended in a tactical stalemate but a strategic victory for Parliament and more importantly, a complete overhaul of how they fought the rest of the war as told in this fascinating talk by military historian Dr Christopher L Scott, part of the Battlefields Trust.
